The current COVID 19 crisis is hitting every sector, but no one has been more devasted than musicians. A new project has been launched to provide free support to young musicians at the outset of their careers between two of the leading music support organisations in Wrexham – FOCUS Wales and VIC Studios. The project has been put together thanks to a grant from the PRS Foundation and Youth Music.

The project is aimed at grassroots creators – recently formed bands or singer / songwriters that have struggled to find a creative outlet throughout the upheavals of 2020.

Young Music Creators are being given the chance to work with professional coaching staff to:

  • Support the professionalisation of their online content
  • Improve their knowledge of the music industry
  • Provide them with access to technology and coaching in how best to use it
  • Identify ways to make money from their music

Working with our partners at FOCUS Wales / VIC Studios the pilot project will initially choose four emerging artists to work with. Through an 8 week process young people will be mentored, and a programme put together to meet the unique needs of each performer. At the end of the process each of the successful applicants will work with a producer to record a professional demo track and a live performance video to promote their work.

Sarah Jones of FOCUS Wales said:

“The core aim of FOCUS Wales is to support emerging Welsh artists, through showcasing at our festival, and our year-round talent development work. Thanks to PRSF and Youth Music, this new project with VIC Studios will enable us to work closely with emerging musicians from our local area, and help them to get a first foot on the ladder of the music industry.”

Chris Lloyd of Vic Studios, said:

“Working with FOCUS Wales on a project like this will help improve our reach to more bands and young performers, many of whom have been struggling and isolated since the pandemic began. Being able to collaborate and key into their expert skills and knowledge of the music industry can help us guide a new generation of musicians towards fulfilling their ambitions, improving their confidence as performers and developing skills that will improve their life chances”.

Applicants should be singer / songwriters aged up to 18, or bands who have original material, with an average age range of 18 or below, with no member being older than 24.

All applicants to the programme will have the chance to come along to VIC Studios for a tour and a chat about their music, as well as the opportunity to take part in future programmes and activities, once this pilot is complete.

(For this pilot, artists must be based in North East Wales, but once the pilot is complete we intend to expand the geographical reach of the programme).
